Palaro 2011 - Exciting As Ever

by Jun Rana

PAL Center, Hockessin, DE, September 10, 2011 - Robert BJ Advento of Pennsylvania converted a three point basket and 6 nerve wracking free throws in the final 8 minutes of the game to lift Team Wedge to a pulsating 58-53 win over Ballersville of Delaware as Wedge captured its first ever 2011 Palaro Open Division Basketball Championship. Earlier, Jake Cortez of Maryland kept Wedge in the game by answering the baskets of Jim Reynolds and Dennis Balagtas in a see-saw battle witnessed by cheering and screaming fans. Then came the heroics of Advento who also got the nod as most valuable player (MVP) of the championship game to seal the victory for Wedge.

Wedge is a team consisting of players from the former No Way/KOP and Red Bulls. Dynamic Physical Theraphy captured third place while newcomer Global Cargo Movers wound up in fourth place. The MVP of the Open Division went to Dave Setters of Wedge for his consistent scoring, defense and rebounding while Karl Malicdem grabbed the Best Coach award by steering Wedge to its first ever championship. Meanwhile in the 35 and over Division, Ballersville Senior Team routed New York Life of Pennsylvania, 83-50 to capture the 35 and Over Year Year Old Division crown. In the Mixed Volleyball Tournament, the Couples for Christ (CFC) nosed out the Delaware Dabarkads in 5 thrilling sets, 21-18, 16-21, 21-10, 14-21 and 21-10 to capture its first ever championship. Prior to the championship, CFC scored a two sets win over The Healing Water Bible Church in their knock-out match. The Healing Water Bible Church placed third in the competition.

In the Youth Basketball Tournament, Matt Alba led the White Team to a convincing win over the Green Team 28-22 as the White Team annexed the championship crown. He had ample support from Justin and Carlo Cardino, Dan Angeles, Joshua Garcia, Franz Alvarez and Kyle Ocampo. Meanwhile the Green Team was bannered by Glenn Sta. Ana of Pennsylvania, female standout Bea Fontano, Aldrin & Edwin Brillante, Miguel Sanchez and player Buenaflor. Gus Alba coached the winning White Team while Mike Sanchez of Dynamic coached the fighting Green Team. Meanwhile the Blue Team emerged third in the competition.

Dynamic took advantage of the slow start of the Movers as Reese Pr’out immediately went to work. In the early going a lay-up by Reese Pr’out punctuated an 11-6 early lead by Dynamic with still 15 minutes to go in the first half. The Movers however, behind Carlos Miranda, settled in the game and traded baskets with Dynamic. With 5 minutes and 22 seconds remaining in the first half, Dynamic led by only 6 points, 20-14.

Sensing for a knock-out punch, Reese Pr’out converted a crucial three point shot to pad the lead to 23-14. A three point shot by Mike Sanchez and a lay-up by Ramon Agui helped further pad the lead of Dyamic to 32-18 with only one minute and 32 seconds remaining in the first half. Jeremy Syto of the Movers answered with a jump shot to cut the lead, to 32-20. Another lay-up by Agui however restored the commanding lead for Dynamic which ended 34-20 in the first half.

In the second half Mark Pr’out, with six points in a crucial stretch, teamed up with his brother Reese to preserve the lead for Dynamic, 42-29, with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Lyle Razon of the Movers took over the scoring chores as he virtually carried the Movers in the game. Anton Arellano of Dynamic, however, scored his only basket for the game, a follow up shot that padded the Dynamic Lead to 44-29, 13 minutes remaining. From this point on, the two teams traded baskets as Dynamic did not let up its guard on the game. To their credit, the Movers cut the lead to 11 at the final buzzer, 51-40.

It was a good start for playing coach Sanchez and his Dynamic charges as they try to win the PAAD Palaro for the first time. For team captain Jet Abellar and his wards, it was a fine display of heads up basketball which brings ray of hope for the Movers in their coming games.

Box Scores:
51 - Dynamic: Reese Pr’out, 22; Mark Pr’out, 12; Mike Sanchez, 6; Ramon Agui, 4; Armando Concepcion, 3; Will Barnes, 2; Anton Arellano, 2, Quito Palanca, 0; Glen De Luna, 0; Mike Alegarbes, 0

40 – Global Cargo Movers: Lyle Razon, 16; Carlos Miranda, 10; Dexter De Luna, 4; Ronald Lorca, 2; Jet Abellar, 2; Jeremy Syto, 2; Chris Syto, 2; Franz Wong, 2; Sherwin Cabalza, 0; Enrique Preche, 0

Message from the PAAD President: PAAD Palaro Resumes Tomorrow, July 30; Healing Water Debuts in Volleyball

Hi Everyone,

Please root for your favorite teams and players, watch the exciting games and enjoy your favorite food.

The 2011 PAAD Palaro resumes tomorrow Saturday at the PAL Center which is located in 7259 Lancaster Avenue, Hockessin, Delaware 19707.  Tomorrow will feature three exciting basketball games and two volleyball games. Gate opens at 10:15 A.M.  The Palaro players, fans and the public will once again be treated with their favorite food and refreshments such as the empanada, sandwiches, pansit, surprise dish and your favorite cool drinks.

The Healing Water Bible Church team will make its initial appearance in the Mixed Volleyball Tournament.  They will play Couples for Christ in the 10:30 A.M. opener, and then will play the Delaware Dabarkads at 11:45 A.M. in the second game.

In the Open Basketball Division, early leader Dynamic Physical Therapy will face an acid test as they battle Ballersville in their 10:30 A.M. encounter. Ballersville is reinforced by reliable veteran players Jim Reynolds and Dennis Balagtas, and can make life very difficult for playing coach Mike Sanchez and his Team Dynamic.  In the 11:45 A.M. game, Team Wedge will go for their second victory in three outings as they battle the never say die, Global Cargo Movers.

In the 35 years old and over Division, the Delaware Titans will try to recover from their opening game loss as they battle the Ballersville 35 plus team in their 11:45 A.M. encounter.  It will be a tall order however for the Titans as Ballersville 35 plus team will have Reynolds and Balagtas playing for them as well. It will be interesting to see the adjustments of the Titans after their sluggish start and loss to New York Life of Pennsylvania last week.   New York Life, has a bye and will not play on Saturday.

Magkita kita po tayo sa Palaro sa Sabado.  See you all and enjoy the wonderful games, the awesome food and drinks, as well as the camaraderie of everyone.

Warmest regards,
Jun Rana

Also, please enjoy the delicious Filipino food such as the empanada, rice and surprise dish, spaghetti, sandwiches, cool drinks and more at the PAAD refreshment area. Opening game winners Dynamic Physical Therapy and Team Wedge will clash in the first game of the Open Division at 10:30 AM in Court No. 2. Both teams came out with impressive wins in the opening day and this game is expected to be a fast tempo and exciting game. Dynamic, with playing coach Mike Sanchez, is a veteran team in Delaware while Team Wedge, with last year's best coach Paul Micarsos, is a combination of the KOP/ Noway and Red Bull teams with players from Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In the second game newcomers Ballersville Open Team with playing coach Herb Monsalud and Global Cargo Movers bannered by team captain Jet Abellar, will try to notch their first win of the tournament. It will be interesting to see the adjustments in the strategy of these teams as they try to improve on their standings in the tournament. This game between two Delaware teams is expected to be close and the team coming up with the big plays down the stretch of the second half of the game may well emerged as the winner.

The 35 and Over Years Old Teams will make their debut in Court No. 1. It will be newcomers New York Life of Pennsylvania with playing coach Ferdie Santa Ana and the Ballersville 35+Team of Delaware in the first game at 10:30 AM. In the second game, New York Life plays the veteran and crowd favorite Delaware Titans team. Physical fitness and stamina will be a big factor in the outcome of these games which promise to be thrilling and to go down the wire. The Titans, with solid players such as Luis Alvarez, Ed Ortega, Eggie Alafriz and Kal Ebron are looking to improve from their runner up finish last year. But Ballersville 35+ with playing coach Monsalud and reliable players Lex Vergara, Sonny De La Torre, Carl Saquing and Doc Mel Madarang, and the New York Life Team are out to thwart the Titans bid.

The Volleyball Teams make their debut in Court No. 3. The Couples for Christ Team will battle the Delaware Dabarkads in Court No. 3 at 10:30 AM. With the intense preparations of these two teams last week, the Volleyball game is expected to produce an entertaining game which will draw cheers from the screaming fans. The third team of the volleyball tournament, Healing Water Bible Church has a bye and is invited to practice in Court No. 3 after the game.

Magkitakita po tayo, magenjoy po tayo sa Sabado sa Palaro. See you all and let's enjoy on Saturday for Day 2 of the 2011 PAAD Palaro. Maraming salamat po. Thank you very much.
